  • If your kid's in the play, opening night is perhaps the most important night to attend, regardless of what ever else is happening. Maybe next year the third Friday..Please????? :-?

My daughter (8th grade) is in the play ... Her take was that 2nd night is better ... No 1st night jitters, but not worn-out like you might be at the 3rd show ... It's tough to find a Friday night where there's not something in town that might be a potential conflict ... That's why we kind of carved 2nd Friday in stone ... Look on the bright side: Middle School is only three years ...

    Second weekend -- MMS play
    Third weekend -- Presidents' Day
Fourth weekend -- End of break, should there be a break
March, First weekend -- No conflict
Second & Third -- CHS Play
    Fourth Weekend -- SOMS play

Then you hit risk of Easter and Passover.

Also, the adult teams of the three secondary school plays overlap, so the two weekends before the CHS play involve the MMS and SOMS adults in Tech and Dress rehearsals. May is Concert Season for the dancers and singers, so that is out. So I guess it is what it is.

  • Bump bump!!
  • Fantastic show this evening. It is so nice to see hard working students, teachers and parents and others come together to put on a great show. We need this sort of thing from time to time to remind us of the good things in our schools.
  • Don't tell me how it ends! I'm going tomorrow night.
  • Run, don't walk...this is a production that should be seen! Remarkable performances by our very talented students. MMS always provides a great show.

Sorry, I have to tell you that it ends in applause.
  • Today is the last show--congrats to all the talented kids and to the teachers and crew that support them.

2PM today--your kids above 7 will love it, as will you.
  • Hope you're wrong, bak. My six year olds are going today.
  • They'll love it! And it moves quickly and is under 2 hours including the intermission.

And it's a thousand times better than the re-released Star Wars Phantom Menace in 3D. The 3D didn't change the fact that it's a mediocre movie at best.

  • They had a great time.
  • Congratulations SOMAP!! You allowed an entire production based on religious teachings and the earth didn't open up, no one burst into flame and, as far as I know, cats and dogs are not sleeping together. If only we could be as open minded during December.
  • soorlady, it's OK because it has nothing to do with any particular holiday, particularly the one at hand.

Sorry I missed the play! I love MMS productions.
  • Too bad we almost had a thread that no one hijacked with snarky self interested comments.
  • Tom - was that coment serious or tongue-in-cheek?

max - I wasn't trying to be snarky.... and since my children are all adults and long out of the school system, I have no self interest other than to say Bravo, nicely done.
  • I'm surprised this fact wasn't pointed out long before this. It is common knowledge that anything remotely "religious" is not allowed in our school system. (I was denied bringing in tree shaped cookies at Tuscan one year.) I think soorlady acknowledged this interesting juxtaposition snarklessly.
  • I deliberately waited until after the production was over to post my congratulations, just in case some idiot would come out and say "I had no idea.... we can't allow this.." and then have all that hard work and talent put in the closet.
  • It is common knowledge that anything remotely "religious" is not allowed in our school system.

Actually, that is not true. Much of the classical music performed in the schools, especially the choral works, would be eliminated if everything REMOTELY religious was prohibited. The policy is to prohibit things that CELEBRATE religious holidays or observances, which includes the tree-shaped cookies and Christmas/Hannukah music for better or worse.

Patently untrue. Some misunderstand and misinterpret the guidelines we have, which are reasonable. It was idiotic to disallow those cookies. There's plenty of religious music performed in the schools, as musical pieces, not religious rites. And how can you even say that, knowing that Joseph was just performed?
  • I am saying I am surprised that Joseph was allowed to be performed. It is rather confusing that I can not bring in a tree cookie yet a play firmly based on the Bible can be performed. That is why I am saying.

Full disclosure: I am a Christian who attends a non denominational church.

You tried to bring Christmas cookies in at Christmastime. That could be considered celebrating a holiday.

This performance was not tied to any religious celebration.

Not knowing the full context of your being told not to bring in cookies, I cannot comment for sure why they were not allowed, but the policy is clear (albeit not always properly and consistently enforced): We do not celebrate religious holidays in the schools.

Full disclosure: I am Jewish and I teach Religious School, and I approve of this policy. I also helped build the set for this show, and I approve its performance. I am also looking forward to the CHS spring concert, where I hear they will be performing a lovely kyrie that is perfectly within the policy since they are not celebrating mass.

  • It's just a story, and not to mention, MMS did this musical before about 8 yrs ago.
  • Well, no schnabbs, in Judeo/Christian theology it is not. However, I see I created a tempest in a tea pot based on my understanding of the musical guidelines... Mea Culpa.

Columbia did the show. (And for the record, it was indeed amazing.)
